When older pipework becomes a problem
Pitch fibre drainage was used in some older properties. Over time, sections can deform, lose their original shape or deteriorate internally. That can restrict flow and contribute to recurring drainage problems. The symptoms alone will not tell us whether pitch fibre is the cause.
What are pitch fibre drains?
Pitch fibre pipes were made using fibrous material bound with bitumen-based compounds. They were installed in some drainage systems before modern plastic pipes became common. Their condition varies, so the presence of pitch fibre does not by itself establish that replacement is needed.
Problems that can develop
Ageing pitch fibre may flatten, blister internally or lose its shape. Those changes can reduce the space available for wastewater to pass and make blockages more likely. Signs worth investigating include:
- Repeated blockages in the same drainage run
- Water backing up despite previous clearance
- Survey findings that show distortion or damage
- Known pitch fibre pipes that have not been inspected for some time
Finding out what condition the pipe is in
A CCTV drain survey can help reveal changes inside an accessible pipe. The type, extent and location of any defect then need to be considered together with the drain’s shape and access arrangements. Sometimes further investigation is necessary before choosing the repair.
Repair, rehabilitation or replacement?
There is no single solution for every pitch fibre drain. Specialist rehabilitation or lining may be appropriate in some conditions, while significant deformation, collapse or other defects can make replacement necessary. We would base a recommendation on the actual pipe rather than its age alone.
A note on older drainage materials
Disturbing or removing older pipes can require material-specific safety precautions and controlled handling. Work should be assessed by competent drainage professionals rather than attempted as a DIY repair.
Questions about pitch fibre drain repairs
How do I know whether my drains are made from pitch fibre?
Property age and past paperwork may offer clues, but they do not confirm the pipe material. A drainage inspection may help identify what is installed and whether there are defects.
Do pitch fibre drains always need replacing?
No. Their condition differs from property to property. Some pipework may be serviceable, some suitable for specialist rehabilitation and some better replaced.
Can pitch fibre drains be relined?
Sometimes. The degree of deformation, remaining pipe support, access and intended repair method all matter. Severe distortion or collapse can rule out certain lining techniques.
Will clearing a blockage solve a pitch fibre problem?
It may restore flow temporarily, but where pipe deformation or internal deterioration is causing repeated obstructions, a longer-term repair may need to be considered.
