Repairing a drain from the inside

A damaged underground drain does not always have to be dug out and replaced. Drain relining creates a new internal lining within suitable existing pipework. Whether that is possible depends on the pipe’s condition, shape, access and the type of defect.

What is drain relining?

Relining places a new lining inside an existing drain rather than removing the full pipe run. Depending on the system and circumstances, a flexible liner is positioned in the pipe and hardened to form a new internal surface. The original pipe generally remains in the ground.

When might relining be considered?

It may be an option where an inspection identifies particular defects but the drain still has enough support and a suitable shape for the repair. Common reasons for further investigation include:

  • Cracks or defective joints in underground pipework
  • Root entry associated with damaged joints
  • Recurring blockages where pipe damage is suspected
  • Sections beneath driveways, paths or landscaping that would be disruptive to excavate

How the repair is assessed

The condition and accessibility of the drain matter more than the apparent size of the problem at ground level. Camera findings, pipe dimensions, bends and connections can affect the recommended method. The drain may need cleaning and preparation before any repair can be undertaken.

When relining is not suitable

Relining cannot correct every defect. A collapsed, badly distorted or poorly graded pipe may need excavation or replacement. A liner also takes up some internal space and cannot change the route or fall of the existing drain. We would rather establish the limitation first than present relining as the answer to everything.

Renoline equipment and repair guarantees

We use specialist Renoline equipment for rehabilitating suitable underground pipes. Our drain-lining work is offered with a 10-year guarantee, with the repair method, scope and written guarantee terms to be agreed as part of the quotation.

Questions about drain relining

Will drain relining mean digging up my driveway?

Not necessarily. One reason to consider relining is that suitable repairs can sometimes be completed through existing access points. Some defects or site conditions still require excavation.

Can a completely collapsed drain be relined?

A full collapse or severe distortion may prevent a liner being installed or working as intended. The pipe needs to be assessed before a repair method can be chosen.

Do I need a CCTV survey first?

Camera inspection is commonly used to establish the nature and position of a defect and whether the drain is a candidate for relining. The precise investigation depends on what is already known.

Is a patch repair different from relining a whole pipe?

Yes. A localised repair targets a shorter defective section. A longer liner may be considered where damage extends along more of the pipe. The appropriate choice depends on the findings.
